The Event
In 2014, Haunts for Hunger was created by Emilee Henson (Skyline '20) and Will Ellsworth (Greenhills '20) . Their idea was to combine their love of Halloween with service to the community. As they researched the ways they could help, they learned that food insecurity was a major issue in Washtenaw County. Parents having to skip meals so their children could eat, buy unhealthy food to cut costs, and send kids to school on empty stomachs are all symptoms of a problem that we must solve. Not only does not having enough food effect someone's health, but their morale and ability to function in our taxing world.
Haunts for Hunger is a haunted house on the west side of Ann Arbor designed for families. Our goal is for you to not only get scared and have a great time, but also for kids and adults alike to realize that doing good does not have to be boring. Each family is asked to bring a food donation as "admission" into the event. Each night, there is a "spooky" time with a more mellow experience and a "scary" time with disorienting and claustrophobic spaces, minimal lighting, flashing lights, dense fog, and very loud sounds. Both times are suitable and fun for families, however we do not recommend the scary portion for very young children. We hope to see you there!
